Heat oven to 350F.
Stir baking soda into sour milk. Shred chocolate; put in a measuring cup and fill with boiling water to make 1/2 cup of liquid chocolate. Cream together shortening and sugar, beating thoroughly. Stir in liquid chocolate, vanilla, and hot coffee, and continue thorough beating. Stir in sifted flour alternately with sour milk, beating the mixture for 3 more minutes. Spoon into a loaf pan (9 x 5 x 3 inches) and bake for about 35 minutes.
